The Choob isn’t one to pre-judge a new TV show, not even a new BBC sitcom (after all, the excellent Outnumbered is one of the best British comedies of recent years). But I do reserve the right to take previous offences into consideration when considering my pre-emptive verdict.
I know. But it gets worse. Big Top stars Amanda Holden. And the press release describes it as “a heart-warming family comedy”.
If this was a murder trial, the judge would be reaching for his black cap.
If anyone is still reading, BBC One controller Jay Hunt said: “Big Top is a heart-warming family comedy with real potential to capture the imagination of the BBC One audience.”
Just in case it’s not clear from the clever wordplay of the show’s title, the sitcom is “set around a travelling circus fraught with problems”, and also stars John Thomson, Ruth Madoc, Sophie Thompson and BlackAdder’s Tony Robinson.
Holden plays ring mistress (no tittering at the back…) Lizzie, who has to overcome the problems (presumably of being stuck in another crap comedy). Thomson and Thompson play husband-and-wife clowns and Robinson takes on the role of a cynical soundman.
Intriguingly, we are told: “Part of the series will be filmed in front of a live studio audience.”
Presumably they mean the part before every audience member’s own major intestine, in a desperate attempt to save them from any more suffering, leaps straight up through their necks and throttles their brains. *
Having said all that, the Choob wishes everyone associated with the the new show the best of luck…
