SpongeBob SquarePants is cleaning up in China (see what I did there?).
Variety reports that the bonkers animated show is the top-rated show on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV’s kids channel.
It is pulling in an audience of 20.5million and is the most popular show in 15 key cities – even though it is not shown until 9pm, due to restrictions on when foreign TV cartoons can be shown (to help boost the nation’s own animation industry).
A breakdown of the viewing figures shows that 45% of viewers are aged 4-14, while, bizarrely, 33% are aged 25-44. Let’s hope that they are parents watching with their kids, or China’s march towards becoming the world’s leading superpower may well be set to grind to a halt.
SpongeBob first arrived in China in 2006.
