Video Killed The Radio Star: A-ha – Take On Me

Another week, another new feature on The Cathode Ray Choob.

We already enjoy classic televised live music performances on Top Of The Pops Thursday.

On Sundays from now on we will revisit some of the classic music videos that helped define the MTV generation and beyond.

First up, from 1985, is the award-winning video for Norwegian band a-ha‘s single Take On Me.

Often when you revisit videos from the 80s that relied heavily on special effects, they really show their age due to the limitations of technology from the time.

However, this one really stands the test of time (hairdos notwithstanding) and I for one am not afraid to admit that I still find the stylish mix of live action and rotoscoped animation mighty impressive.

It was directed byIrishman Steve Barron, who also made the groundbreaking computer-animated video for Dire Straits’ smash hit Money For Nothing, not to mention the famous McEwans Lager Chinheads advert, before going on to direct movies such as Electric Dreams, the original big-screen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mike Bassett: England Manager.

And here, just for fun, is Family Guy‘s brief spoof/homage to the video:
