It’s Classic Clip Friday: Filthy, Rich and Catflap – Midge Uurghhh!

As you know from yesterday’s Top Of The Pops Thursday, this is Ultravox Week on The Cathode Ray Choob, celebrating the band’s Return To Eden reunion tour, which kicks off today.

And so, this week’s classic TV clip features Ultravox singer Midge Ure being ridiculed by Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson on the short-lived 1987 BBC comedy Filthy Rich & Catflap (which also starred Nigel Planer), the (somewhat less successful) follow-up to The Young Ones.

Note that this is the unedited version of Ure’s cameo – the version released on DVD cut the section of the scene where Edmondson sings a few lines of The Police song Roxanne, due to royalties issues.

What you need to know before watching this clip (for reasons that will become obvious) is that the Ultravox song Vienna was famously kept off number-one spot in the UK top-40 singles chart in 1981 by a comedy song called Shaddap Your Face by Joe Dolce.

Enjoy!
