A Word From Our Sponsors… Daley Thompson Drinks Lucozade

It’s not too often that heavy metal music crosses over into the mainstream.

So, as a big Iron Maiden Fan back in the 80s and early 90s, I was pleasantly surprised when one of their songs turned up in a major TV advertising campaign around 1983-1984.

The ad was for Lucozade (an energy drink) and also featured Britain’s popular two-time Olympic decathlon champion Daley Thompson.

The music is the intro to the song Phantom Of The Opera, from Iron Maiden’s eponymous 1980 debut album.

Here, as a bonus, is a vintage recording of the band performing the song live (from 1980, with original lead singer Paul Di’Anno):
