Tuesday Is Theme Tunes Day – The Professionals


A couple of months ago, you may remember, Theme Tunes Day paid tribute to influential 1970s cop drama The Sweeney.

This week, we turn the spotlight on the show that was, in some ways, The Sweeney‘s spiritual successor, albeit more glossy and superficial – The Professionals.

The show was created by Brian Clemens (who also created The Avengers) and ran for five seasons (57 episodes) between 1977 and 1983.

It starred Martin Shaw and Lewis Collinsas Ray Doyle and William Bodie, agents working for Criminal Intelligence 5 (CI5) a fictitious special elite law enforcement division set up to deal with, by any means necessary, crimes beyond the capacity of the police to deal with but which are not appropriate for the secret service or the military. Their boss, George Cowley, was played by veteran Scottish actor Gordon Jackson.

The theme tune was written by Laurie Johnson, who also wrote the theme for The Avengers and The New Avengers, among many others.
