Cool Hand Luke (1967) is one of the all-time great prison movies.
Paul Newman, in one of his greatest roles, plays “Cool Hand” Luke Jackson – so called because after bluffing with worthless cards to win at poker, he comments, “Sometime nothing can be a real cool hand”.
Sentenced to two years hard labour at a tough Florida prison camp, run by a sadistic captain, for a petty, drunken crime, the free-spirited Luke refuses to conform.
His struggle to retain his individuality and buck the system makes him a hero in the eyes of his fellow mistreated inmates, reflecting the broader anti-establishment mood of 1960s America.
