The Monday Movie – Any Given Sunday

“You find out life’s this game of inches. So is football. Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small…
…The inches we need are everywhere around us. They’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second.
On this team, we fight for that inch. On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone else around us, to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch.
Because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s gonna make the fuckin’ difference between winning and losing.
Between living and dying.”

Maybe it’s because I’m not much of an American Football fan (as far as US sports go, it’s baseball all the way for the Choob), but I found Oliver Stone‘s 1999 movie Any Given Sunday pretty mediocre.

It does, however, boast one of film’s great inspirational speeches, delivered in the dressing room towards the end of the film by Al Pacino‘s Tony D’Amato, head coach of the fictional Miami Sharks football team.

  1. Stone isn’t interested in merely bashing modern football: Any Given Sunday looks at the best and worst of the sport. It also doesn’t disappoint from an acting standpoint; with a cast like this it could hardly miss. Good write-up, check out my review when you can!
