Tuesday Is Theme Tunes Day – The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾; The Growing Pains Of Adrian Mole

I was a huge fan of the first two of Sue Townsend’s Adrian Mole books back in the 80s and also loved the TV adaptations.

The six-episode first series, called The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾ after the first book in the series, aired on ITV in 1985.

It starred Gian Sammarco as Adrian, with Stephen Moore (who also provided the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android in the BBC radio and TV versions of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) as his dad, Julie Walters as his mum and Beryl Reid as his gran.

The show’s theme song, Profoundly In Love With Pandora, was written and performed by the late, great Ian Dury. Here are the show’s opening titles:

A second series, also six episodes, aired on ITV in 1987. The title was changed to The Growing Pains Of Adrian Mole, also the title of the second book in the series, and Lulu replaced Walters as Adrian’s mum. Dury again provided the theme song, which retained the tune of the one used in the first season but featured updated lyrics reflecting the changes in Adrian’s life:

The original version of the theme song was also released as a single and here is the promo video:

And, as a bonus, here is the rare b-side of the single, a song called Eugenius (You’re A Genius) :

  1. Dean

was the 2nd series “The Growing Pains Of Adrian Mole” ever released on video? even youtube doesnt have clips of it….Cheers

  2. No, I don’t think it has ever been available, either on video or DVD. There are some dodgy DVD copies available on eBay (most likely transferred from old off-air VHS recordings, I’d assume) if you are desperate to see it.
