Finally! First Official Photos Of Doctor Who’s New Season 5 TARDIS Interior

At last, with less than a week to go before season five of Doctor Who launches (season five in post-revival terms, that is – season 31 overall) and Matt Smith‘s reign as the eleventh Doctor begins (the first episode airs in the UK on Easter Saturday, April 3, on April 17 in the US and Canada and on April 18 in Australia), we finally have our first proper look at the new TARDIS interior.

We already knew that the console room would be split over two levels and have been promised a look at some other rooms in the TARDIS but for now, all the shots are of the main level of the console room.

If, like me, you were a bit confused that the Doctor and Amy (played by Scots actress Karen Gillan) appear to be standing in front of two different versions of the Tardis console, in fact they are standing on the perspex platform in the top picture and down on the “Swiss-cheese”-style main floor in the others.

So, what do you think? Comments welcome.

More pics over at Radio Times.

Inside Doctor Who’s New Tardis

UPDATE: MARCH 30, 2010 – Click here for the first official photos of the new TARDIS interior!

The first episode of the new series of Doctor Who (the fifth since the series was revived), starring Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, received its world premiere in Cardiff on Thursday night.

We already knew that the TARDIS gets a makeover, inside and out, during the first episode but the interior is still being kept a closely guarded secret.

However a few clues have slipped out – we know that the console room will be split over several levels, linked by a spiral staircase. We are also promised we will finally see some other of the TARDIS’s other rooms for the first time since the series was revived.

This is the view from outside the TARDIS looking in (a cloth backdrop is used during filming to give the impression of a large interior):

This is taken from the BBC trailer for the new series and appears to show The Doctor sitting in a swing seat on the upper level of the console room:

And finally, for now, from fan website Inside The Tardis, we have this, which appears to be the wardrobe room (EDIT: oops, just realised that this is actually the old (9th/10th Doctor) TARDIS, from the scene in The Christmas Invasion in which 10th Doctor David Tennant was choosing his new outfit):

Watch this space (including Time And Relative Dimensions)..!

Doctor Who – Next Doctor Unveiled Today

Huge Doctor Who news, if this story from Digital Spy turns out to be correct.

They say that the identity of the actor (or, who knows, actress?) who will replace David Tennant next year to become the 11th Doctor will be revealed later today (Saturday, January 3) in an episode of behind-the-scenes show Doctor Who Confidential.

Tune in to BBC1 at 5.35 to find out if this is for real or if they are playing games with us again.

It’s worth noting, mind you, that Doctor Who Confidential has rarely (if ever) aired on the main BBC channel before. Make of that what you will. Here is the official BBC description of the show:

“It has been 45 years since the TARDIS first landed on BBC1. Join us as we look at the lives of the ten Doctors, their most heroic moments and terrifying adventures, as well as the monsters, costumes and companions which have defined them.”

EDIT: It looks like it’s all legit, right enough. This is from the Doctor Who Confidential site:

The BBC confirmed today that it will reveal the identity of the Eleventh Doctor as part of a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential to be aired on BBC ONE tomorrow, Saturday 03 January at 17:35hrs.

Following the announcement in October that David Tennant would be stepping down from his role as the Doctor at the end of 2009, speculation has been mounting as to who would take over from him for the fifth series of this iconic BBC drama that will air in 2010.

With a new creative team in place for the new series led by Executive Producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the new Doctor was job number one to be completed before scripts could be finalised and shooting could begin in summer 2009.

In the Doctor Who special, to be aired tomorrow at 17.35hrs, the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction to being the new, eleventh incarnation of one of television’s most loved characters.

Head Of Drama BBC Wales Piers Wenger said, “We are so pleased to have been able to cast this person as the new Doctor. We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own – I just can’t wait to tell everyone who it is – it has been a nail biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!”.
