Video Killed The Radio Star: The Alarm – Spirit Of ’76

Never a very trendy band, Welsh rockers The Alarm were, for me, nevertheless one of the better bands of the 1980s.

I spotlighted a live version of their best-known song, 68 Guns, earlier this year. Less well-remembered but one of their best is the anthemic Spirit of ’76.

From the 1985 album Strength, it’s a song about lost love and faded friendships, shattered hopes and dreams dashed by the unemployment and deprivation that was rife in Thatcher’s Britain.

A true classic that deserves to be better remembered.
