10,000 BC (Brilliant Choob-readers)


Wow.

The WordPress goblin who presses the button on The Cathode Ray Choob‘s hit counter (look, it’s over there on the right – the counter, that is, not the goblin) every time someone “choons” in to the blog tells me that we passed the 10,000 mark shortly before midnight yesterday!

You may remember back on March 6, I posted this little note thanking you all for helping me pass the 5000 hits mark in just three and a half months.

Well, here we are, just over two months later, having burst through the 10k milestone. I’m truly delighted that the blog appears to be continuing to grow slowly, but steadily, and so a big thank you to all who have stumbled into my little corner of the internet – and in particular to those of you who keep coming back again and again. It makes it all worthwhile.

Okay, before I get into the boring stuff about the mechanics of doing this blog and some of the statistics, I was trying to think of something appropriately 10,000-y to post for you as a wee thank you present.

The best I could come up with was either a clip from the rubbish movie 10,000 BC (referenced, of course, in the title of this post) or something by 90s indie rockers 10,000 Maniacs. No contest, really. I can’t claim anything more than a passing familiarity with the band but this song, These Are Days, is pretty good and seemed kind of appropriate.

This performance, with Natalie Merchant on vocals shortly before she left the band, was recorded at US President Bill Clinton’s inaugural ball in January 1993.

Okay. So. When I started the blog last December, I had no idea whether I would be able to post more than once or twice a week – or even keep it going at all for more than a few weeks.

Now, much to my surprise, I have somehow managed to introduce (and more to the point, successfully maintain each week) six daily features (The Monday Movie, Tuesday Is Theme Tunes Day, A Word From Our Sponsors, Top Of The Pops Thursday, Classic Clip Friday and Video Killed The Radio Star).

I’m hoping, once the summer holiday season is over to add a Saturday feature so that there is one for each day of the week. Not quite sure what it will be yet, so if anyone has any suggestions, please leave a comment on my About Me page (or any other blog page for that matter – I’ll see it) or drop me a line at the email address you can find in the sidebar to the right or on my About Me page. Similarly if you have any suggestions for stuff you’d like me to include in any of the regular features, let me know.

I’m currently in the process of trying to prepare posts a month or two in advance, rather than doing it each day by the seat of my pants, as has been the case so far.

The main reason, in the short-term, is that I’m about to head off on holiday for almost three weeks and if I can build up a stockpile, I can continue to post (thanks to WordPress’s nifty auto-scheduling facility) while I am away, so that the blog is not starved of new content.

In the longer-term, I’d like to get back to posting more TV news, which has suffered a little of late, so if I can build in a buffer of prepared content, it should free up a little time for that.

Anyway, thanks again for all your visits and comments and supporting the blog. Here are a few statistics for you:

I’ve posted 216 articles since starting the blog on December 22.

Currently, the site is averaging just over 125 hits per day. As a comparison, in January the average was 32 per day.

The busiest day so far was April 1, when there were 354 visitors – most of whom were, I’m ashamed to say, lured here under false pretences with an April Fool’s joke. Sorry.
